do you know if it is legal for a courier company to open a parcel which is addressed to you?

I wasn’t at home when a Parcelnet courier tried to deliver a parcel of books for me. Rather than post a card notifying me of unsuccessful delivery or leave it with a neighbour the courier opened the package and individually posted the books, the invoice and the packaging. Not only was this an invasion of privacy but there was every likelihood that the package could have contained personal and/or financial information.

Is there a law in UK regarding what time parcel delivery companies can deliver?

A neighbour moved into our cul-de-sac last year and it became obvious that he worked as a courier for a parcel company. We were getting parcel lorries on a daily basis (excluding Sunday) at around 7.00 a.m. It has almost ceased now as the neighbour goes out of the estate and meets the lorry around the corner.

When there was a delivery the other Saturday morning at around 7.00 a.m. my neighbour phoned the parcel company and was told it was legal to deliver to residential areas after 7.00 a.m.

Does anyone know if this is true?
